Watch Exodus: Gods and Kings Online Free

This article below, written in July 2014, was an estimated guess — an optimistic one — about Ridley Scott’s new film and whether it would portray the Exodus account in a way that would capture the hearts and affections of people of faith. After seeing the film, I must confess that my speculation/guess below was wrong. Although the acting, the special effects, and the settings were excellent and full of powerful nuance, I strongly disliked the script’s portrayal of God and His interactions with Moses, and I suspect other people of faith will have a similar reaction.
If you haven’t heard, Ridley Scott, the genius director behind movie masterpieces like Gladiator and Blade Runner, has adapted the Biblical story of Moses and the Exodus into an epic, larger-than-life movie starring Christian Bale as Moses. It comes out December 12, 2014.

This year’s turning out to be the Year of the Bible in Hollywood, with releases like Son of God, Heaven Is for Real, God’s Not Dead, Mom’s Night Out, The Perfect Wave starring Scott Eastwood (Clint Eastwood’s son), the ever-controversial Noah starring Russell Crowe (read my review of Noah here), and another movie called The Song, which is a modernized Walk the Line meets the Song of Solomon that comes out in September. (I’ve seen a preview screening of The Song already, and it’s amazing.)

And, almost like some kind of grand finale to close out Hollywood’s historical Year of the Bible, one of the greatest directors in movie history is applying his seasoned chops to one of the most legendary heroes in the Bible: Moses and the great Exodus.

And I believe this movie, unlike Aronofsky’s Noah, will be wholly embraced by Christians.

Watch The Imitation Game Online megavideo, There’s also another defining struggle of Turing’s life: that he is a gay man at a time when gay sex is illegal. This is presented as an underlying challenge for Turing in this film — something that he is not always contending with, but is often present — and it is naturally a critical aspect of Turing to explore given his conviction for "indecency" later in life.

The Imitation Game explores this in a few different ways. The first is in Turing’s growing friendship with Joan Clarke, played by Keira Knightley, a fellow codebreaker who is among the few people that understand him. She’s able to do this because she, too, is often the odd one out: a woman in a man’s world, and someone who is doing far more incredible things than anyone expected of her. On her own, Clarke provides a wonderful, lighthearted aside to Turing’s seriousness. (She also throws down a man or two who’s too dumb to realize how smart she is, which is pretty great.) But mostly, she’s there to help us see into Turing, giving him the opportunity to talk to someone on his level. His interest in her is also a constant pressure on him, slowly forcing Turing to contend with the fact that he does not truly want to be with her romantically.

The movie also explores Turing and his struggles as a gay man by drawing comparisons between him and the machine that he’s building to crack Engima, neither being something that anyone else can fully understand. It’s funny, of course, because Turing’s most iconic idea is a test that asks you to tell the difference between a machine and a human. And, at least in the world of this film, Turing would perhaps be accidentally judged as a machine because he’s so strange. It ultimately makes for a weak and muddled metaphor, the point being that he’s actually human — just one a bit different than everyone else. The film uses that metaphor to espouse some feel-good sentiments that don’t play as well as it would like, but it’s still a clever enough way of giving insight into Turing.
The machine metaphor keeps going. In Turing’s mind, the war is about machines. Whenever the film cuts away from England to show the war, all we see are tanks, battleships, and submarines. It’s Turing’s machine versus theirs, and his is perhaps the most important of the war. Because of that, we see Turing grow obsessed with his own machine — it is the one thing he allows himself to grow an attachment to during his adult life. Only when something comes between the two of them does Turing really start to break down.

The Imitation Game It’s in those moments of crisis that the film shines. Cumberbatch plays Turing as calm and poised, but it’s here that he’s suddenly free to give us his all. Otherwise, Cumberbatch presents Turing as the mystery that he’s supposed to be, at least for the sake of this film. He walks a fine line between genius and oddball, between commanding a conversation and blustering his way through one. Cumberbatch never lets us know what side Turing actually lands on, and that’s part of the fun.

Judging from Snowden-derived stories in the Guardian and the Washington Post, some of these documents also detail NSA intercepts of email and cellphone conversations by Taliban fighters in Pakistan; assessments of CIA assets in several foreign countries; and surveillance of cellphone calls “worldwide” that (in the Post’s words) allows the NSA “to look for unknown associates of known intelligence targets by tracking people whose movements intersect.” In Snowden’s first interview abroad, with the South China Morning Post, he disclosed that the NSA routinely hacks into hundreds of computers in Hong Kong and China. Just last week a story co-authored by Poitras in Greenwald’s new publication, the Intercept, revealed—again, based on Snowden-supplied documents—that the NSA has undercover operatives in Germany and China.

Whatever you think about foreign intelligence operations, the NSA’s core mission is to intercept communications of foreign governments and agents. If Snowden and company wanted to take down an intelligence agency, they should say so. But that has nothing to do with whistleblowing or constitutional rights.

At one very interesting point in the film, Snowden tells Poitras and Greenwald, “Some of these documents are legitimately classified,” and their release “could do great harm” to intelligence sources and methods. He adds, “I trust you’ll be responsible” in handling them.

This is what most baffles me about the whole Snowden case. What kind of whistleblower hands over a digital library of extremely classified documents on a vast range of topics, shrugs his shoulders, and says, I’ll let you decide what to publish? He tells the two journalists that he’s “too biased” to pick and choose himself. What does that mean? These are esoteric, in some cases highly technical documents; he’s in a better position to know their implications than Poitras and Greenwald; certainly he could warn them, “Oops, I shouldn’t have included this one. It’s really sensitive.”

In an Oct. 11 livestreamed interview, part of the New Yorker’s annual festival, Jane Mayer asked Snowden if any of the stories inspired by his documents went too far in divulging secrets. He replied, “It’s not my place” to render judgment. That’s not true: It’s precisely his place to do that. It’s a gigantic evasion to leak however many beyond-top-secret documents he leaked—some say tens of thousands, some say millions—and then abrogate all responsibility for their circulation to the world.

Citizenfour  Daniel Ellsberg, whom Snowden cites as a model, didn’t riffle through every classified vault at the RAND Corp. and turn the stash over to the New York Times for its editors to pick and choose. Ellsberg had a goal: He wanted to end the Vietnam War. The Pentagon Papers—an official secret history of the war, commissioned by Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, replete with internal memos and documents—revealed the delusions that got us into the war and the lies that perpetuated our involvement. Even so, Ellsberg did not Xerox or leak four volumes of the papers; he regarded them—they dealt with ongoing peace negotiations—as legitimately secret.

Then again, maybe there’s no mystery here. Maybe Snowden’s intent, all along, was to take down the top-secret edifice, and his dissociation from decisions on what to publish is a legal maneuver to quash his indictment under the Espionage Act, should he ever come home to face trial.

In the interview with Jane Mayer, Snowden said a few times that the secrets he spilled aren’t really very serious anyway. Regarding the NSA’s bulk collection of metadata—the topic of the first several newspaper articles about the leaks—he claimed, “They’ve never stopped a single American attack.”

Watch Dear White People Movie Streaming Free, While the narrative can be sluggish, it does culminate in a potent climax that's brought on by Kurt and his ignorant cohorts. You see, the theme of their big Halloween bash this year is "Hip Hop," which for them means "purple drank," gold jewelry, XXXL t-shirts and, worst of all, actual blackface. (Before you call bull, the film's end credits provide depressingly recent photos of actual colleges doing this exact thing.) Anyway, without spoiling anything, said party comes to an exhilarating head that pays off -- definitely one of film's finest moments.

Of course, comparisons will likely be made to Spike Lee's films, both visually and structurally. In truth, Simien's work does bear some resemblance to School Daze and (to a lesser extent) Do the Right Thing. Even so, it's markedly more polished than either of those films, which is impressive considering this is Simien's first feature. But more to the point, Dear White People offers a sharp, candid dissection of American race relations, which in today's modern society isn't seen nearly often enough.

Dear White People: It’s rare for a film’s title to announce so plainly both its targeted audience and modus operandi, and in such few words. Then again, it’s not often that a debut feature that isn’t a documentary has such an unmistakable point of view, as writer-director Justin Simien demonstrates in his satirical romp about exploding racial tensions on a fictional, elite college campus. “Racism is over in America,” proclaims the white president (Peter Syvertsen) of Winchester College to Dean Fairbanks (Dennis Haysbert). “The only people who are thinking about it are Mexicans, probably.” The reaction shot of the bemused dean—who, we learn, graduated from their mutual alma mater summa cum laude while the president barely passed—says it all without saying a word.

That’s an example of Dear White People at its best—dialogue plucked perfectly from the comments section below any article or YouTube video about race, slyly presented in all its absurdity, little comment necessary. Unfortunately, Simien’s many smart, relevant thoughts on race are more often wrapped up in an impassioned, didactic bow that rarely feels fresh—or, more damagingly, funny.
If you pay attention to indie film, you know about Dear White People: The film’s incredible social media campaign has included an enticing viral trailer as well as popular video tie-ins, some of which include schooling white people on proper etiquette when interacting with blacks. Dear White People has a direct and pointed message for well-meaning whites about the myth of a post-racial society. But Dear White People is also meant to appeal to folks who resemble the director, now 31, who began working on the script eight years ago while a student at a small private California college: black millennials who have had the fortune of living at a time where there are more opportunities for them than ever before in history, but must also learn to navigate a tricky and uncomfortable world that has only changed so much. A world where their mere presence, however minimal, on the campuses of PWIs (“privileged white institutions”) is frequently challenged by unfounded laments on affirmative action, and being “twice as good” as white peers is still a mantra handed down by elders. Dear White People actively encourages those millennials in the audience to nod their heads in agreement or laugh heartily out of sadness as bigotry, microaggression, and flat-out racism are exposed and contested unabashedly.

Watch Dear White People Online Streaming, That’s the conclusion reached by far too many people in the real world apparently, and the new film Dear White People sets out to address those opinions on both sides of the color-divide through a combination of frequent laughs and a sharply farcical commentary. If Higher Learning and P.C.U. spent a drunken night together this would be the frowned-upon result of that union. Just don’t call it a movilatto.

Winchester University is an Ivy League school populated primarily with white students, but the campus ignites with controversy after one of the houses hosts a racially-fueled party inviting people to come celebrate and liberate their “inner negro.”  We then jump back several weeks in the lives of a quartet of black students who find their own personal agendas intertwined and altered leading up to the party.

Samantha White (Tessa Thompson) is at the center of it all thanks to her campus radio show and its signature segment, “Dear White People,” where she offers advice to pale students struggling to navigate the dangerous waters of race relations. (“Dear White People, the minimum requirement of black friends needed to not seem racist has been raised… to two.) Lionel Higgins (Tyler James Williams), by contrast, is trying to avoid the spotlight. He’s black, gay, and more into Mumford & Sons than rap, but while he doesn’t hide who he is he’s at his most comfortable sitting on the sidelines as an observer (and writer for the school paper).

Troy (Brandon P. Bell) is head of his campus house, dating the university president’s (white) daughter, and looking forward to a future in politics. He’s also Samantha’s ex and the son of the Dean of Students (Dennis Haysbert). Colandrea “Coco” Connors (Teyonah Parris) is a dark-skinned, weave-wearing go-getter whose goal is to play whatever game is necessary to find success on a new reality TV auditioning for “interesting” people.

Also along for the comically race-baiting ride are Kurt (Kyle Gallner), the president’s son and head of the house hosting the questionably themed party, and his sister Sophie (Brittany Curran) who’s dating Troy. (Ahem, “Dear White People, dating a black person just to piss off your parents is a form of racism.”) Finally, stuck at the intersection of charming and bland is Gabe (Justin Dobies). He’s currently seeing Samantha on the sly because she fears it would distract from her appearance as a proud black woman.

Writer/director Justin Simien‘s feature debut is a fantastically entertaining comedy that finds itself amid the laughs. Characters pass judgements and stereotypical assumptions, and the film smacks them down with singular fervor. They think they’re in a war of black vs white, but the film avoids the misstep so many of its characters take. The narrative is obviously leaned heavily to one side, but the message is not.

Unlike John Singleton’s angry, melodramatic diatribe back in 1995, Simien’s film gives everyone an equal voice and acknowledges that truth and humanity are shared commodities. That said, he’s not implying that the things everyone says are of equal value… because that’s just dumb. (See just about any internet comment thread for confirmation.)

The onscreen talent are no slouches either as each of them bring a real energy and investment to the film. Thompson stands out for her vitality and beauty (inside and out) that radiate from the screen alongside a performance that’s just comical enough to earn laughs from little more than her various expressions. Williams, best known for TV’s Everybody Hates Chris, already shows a mastery of understated comic delivery and is allowed multiple opportunities to shine here.

For as much as the script gets right though there are a few problems. A subplot involving Samantha’s dad is little more than a tangent, but it’s expected to wring emotion it never had the time to earn. Some of the observations are a bit too on the nose and cliched, and (sin of movie sins) we get a flashback in the film to a scene that we just watched earlier in the film. Seriously, if the audience needs reminding of something they saw an hour earlier than either they’re idiots or you’ve done something wrong. Finally, some of the characters’ statements aren’t as challenged as they should be. I’m looking at you “Black people can’t be racist…”
